Many of you have heard of the "Grand Canyon" of Michigan...but have you seen it in the winter???
This amazing waterfall transforms into something really special when the temperatures drop and things begin to freeze. It really is a sight to behold.
We like to come here about once a month throughout the winter to see how it changes. The roadside park that the trailhead is located at it closed and gated off in the winter. But there is usually enough space cleared in front of the gate to safely park and hike in from there.
I would recommend snowshoes for this hike in the winter, but they are not absolutely necessary. As time goes on there is usually a packed down trail that is easy to follow. It also follows along the North Country Trail which is well marked!
The hike itself isn't very long, about 1/2 mile each way. You'll get some great views of the Sturgeon River on the way to the main attraction...Canyon Falls! If you're feeling adventurous you can continue following the trail past the main waterfall along the gorge for even more amazing views.
Location: The trailhead is located at a roadside park off US-41 just south of L'Anse near Alberta. Directions can be found on Google Maps.
