Eben Ice Caves is one of the most well-known winter adventures in the Upper Peninsula. It's one of our favorite icy hikes to do every winter, and we're going to give you the run-down on what to expect if you'd like to visit!
Located in the Rock River Canyon Wilderness near Eben Junction, access to the ice caves has definitely improved over the last few years. There is a nice large parking area at the trailhead, with great information and even bathrooms! It is free to park here and hike, but donations are appreciated and can be made at the parking area.
The trail starts right at the parking area, and is about 1.5-2 miles round trip. It is an out and back trail, so you'll come back the same way you hike in. Crampons or some sort of boot traction is HIGHLY recommended, as the trail can often have slippery spots. The last section of trail leading up to the ice caves is a steep uphill climb and can sometimes be pure ice. This is where crampons come in very handy, and also help when exploring the ice caves.
When exploring around ice caves, always use caution and common sense. Beware of possible falling ice, watch your head, and do not break the ice off.
Weekends can get extremely busy here. If you'd like some solitude and the possibility of having the ice caves to yourself, I would recommend going during the week if possible, and as early as possible.
Location: Frey Road, Deerton, Michigan. Trailhead can be found on Google Maps.
