One of my very first winter adventures was to the Ice Curtains in Munising...and I've been hooked on ice ever since! It's a lesser known spot than Eben Ice Caves...but there is a lot more to see here.
The easiest of the ice curtains to access are along Sand Point Road. Park in the designated parking area towards the end of Sand Point Road and then walk back west down the road. Before long you will see some small brown signs on the south side of the road, these have the names of the different ice formations on them. There is usually a path in the snow to follow, and from here you just climb up the slope to the various ice formations. You can sometimes hike along the top to see the different ice curtains, or you can also hike back down to the road and on to the next one from there. The areas around the ice formations can be extremely slick, crampons or boot traction is HIGHLY recommended. Hiking poles can sometimes help with balance and stability as well.
If you're up for a somewhat challenging adventure...this one has a huge payoff! The ice curtains are formed by seeping water from the sandstone cliffs. They produce the most beautiful curtains of ice that can vary in color from an ice blue to green, pink, and brown. The ice curtains usually begin to form in mid December sometimes lasting into April. It is a popular spot among ice climbers as well!
Location: The locations of the ice curtains vary along Sand Point Road. The parking area can be found on Google Maps. From there, walk west back down the road until you see the small brown signs on the south side of the road indicating the different ice formations. See photos below for what the signs look like.
